My baby has diarrhoea – which foods help & what should I avoid?
Diarrhoea happens to most babies at some time. If it happens to your baby, as well as trying to find out what caused it – to possibly avoid it again – you need to help your baby’s delicate digestive system to recover, and not make it worse with the wrong foods.
Some foods can help ‘bind’ your baby, and some foods are best avoided until his system recovers. Always remember, though, that a baby with diarrhoea can soon become dehydrated – so fluids are vital.
Helpful foods include:
- Breast milk or formula
- Dry toast
- Baby rice cereal
- Cooked carrot
- Cooked white potato
- Apple sauce (apple puree) – sugar free
- White grape juice
*Bio yogurt is particularly helpful for easing diarrhoea, because it contains the ‘friendly’ bacteria Lactobacillus. Your paediatrician may suggest acidophilus supplements – usually available at most health food stores.
Your paediatrician may also suggest switching your baby from cow’s milk-based formula to soy formula for a week or two, as cow’s milk can be difficult for a baby to digest if he is recovering from diarrhoea.
Foods to avoid giving to your baby if he has diarrhoea:
- Dairy products – except for yogurt* (see above)
- Pear juice
- Cherry juice
- Prunes (dried plums)
- Apple juice
Applesauce(apple puree) is good and apple juice is not?
Applesauce or puree is made from the whole fruit, so it contains pectin – and pectin will make stools firmer. Apple juice contains a natural sugar called sorbitol – it can make diarrhoea worse, or even cause it!
