Your baby’s paediatrician may recommend “No dairy until 12 months”. This refers to giving whole cow’s milk as your baby’s main ‘drink’ – rather than breast milk or formula milk – before he or she is 12 months old.
Until your baby reaches 12 months of age…
- Whole cow’s milk will not contain enough nutrients, vitamins or minerals to sustain healthy growth and development – only breast or formula milk will do this.
- Whole cow’s milk will not supply adequate amounts of Vitamin E, iron, and essential fatty acids.It will also hinder the proper absorption of iron – further depleting baby’s supply of this vital mineral and putting him or her at risk of developing iron deficient anaemia.
- Whole cow’s milk will supply levels of protein, sodium, and potassium that may be too high for your baby’s system to handle.
- Whole cow’s milk protein and fat will be more difficult for your baby to digest and absorb.
According to Calcium for Infants & Toddlers from the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) – after the age of 1 year, and up to the age of 2 years, your baby will only need around 460ml (16 ounces) of whole cow’s milk per day.It is suggested that more cow’s milk than this may increase the risk of anaemia and nutrient displacement, as the extra milk will be replacing whole foods that baby needs for a balanced, healthy diet.
